Crowns / Caps

A crown is needed on a tooth when the tooth is weakened either by decay, a fracture or a very large restoration and it can not be restored to adequate strength or form by a directly placed filling.

Dr. Dantini has extensive experience in cosmetic dentistry and the placement of crowns. He understands the benefits of using the most conservative treatment possible to achieve the desired result and is pleased to advise his patients on the best approach for their circumstance.

Repairing a tooth with porcelain or full gold crown will usually take two appointments.

On the first appointment, Dr. Dantini will numb the tooth and prepare it by removing 1-2 millimeters of the natural crown until the weakened portion of the tooth is removed and solid structure remains.

On the second appointment, the crown is bonded or cemented to the prepared natural tooth. A new crown should look natural and feel comfortable in the mouth.

It is vital to take care of a crowned tooth. The margins between the crown and the natural tooth are areas that are susceptible to decay and must be kept clean. Properly taken care of, crowns can last 5 to 15 years, and sometimes even longer.

Crowns are not used as frequently in cosmetic dentistry as they once were because of more conservative procedures like veneers, bonding, and bleaching. However, when teeth have been severely damaged by decay, have large fillings or are rotated or crooked, they may require the extra strength of a crown.
